BAZE DONS SCOOP INTERNATIONAL DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARD

baze researchers

Basil Okoli is a Senior Lecturer in Management at Baze Univeristy, Abuja, and Professor David Smith is Dean of the Faculty. After more than twenty years experience as an executive in the banking sector of Nigeria, Basil Okoli joined Baze University. He was ideally placed to reflect on and analyse the issues facing a large, failing retail bank operating in a developing country in an environment of political instability.

Together the two academics pieced together the salient features of the business environment typical of a resource-rich African economy. They then detailed the difficulties experienced by banks operating in an environment where contracts are difficult to enforce and bad business decisions are often taken as a result of political pressure.

The authors received a Distinguished Research Award at the International Conference of Allied Academics which took place in San Antonio, Texas, USA in October 2013 for their innovative work in approaching the problems of rebuilding and restructuring such a bank in a case-study format.
