CENTRE FOR FOUNDATION AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (CFIS)

CENTRE FOR FOUNDATION AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (CFIS)

BRIEF HISTORY

The CFIS was created in the year 2018 as a vehicle to warehouse multiple programmes and projects of Baze University which could not conveniently fit into the regular academic programmes in other faculties of the University.  The first Director of the unit was Dr. Rukkayatu A. Gurin, an astute administrator who is versed in Nigerian University systems- having worked in National Universities Commission (NUC) as director of Students’ Support Services and Entrepreneurship. At Baze University, Dr. Gurin proceeded to set up a functional Centre which was hitherto a mere service department hosting general studies courses. Presently, the Centre is headed by Professor Emeka Ene who is a well-experienced academician cum entrepreneur with so many years of experience in both areas. A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Prof. has over 27 years of teaching experience in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. He is a practicing Accountant of over 23 years and a partner in a highly reputable Audit and Management Consultancy firm which is serving several public and private sector organizations in Nigeria in different capacities. Prof has also served as the Director of Entrepreneurship Development Centre in another Nigerian University for over five years before joining Baze University. In addition to this, Prof has served as the Dean of Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and Head of Accounting and Finance Department of Baze University and this is besides his service as Head of Accounting Department in other Universities in Nigeria.

AREAS OF COVERAGE

The following are the areas of coverage of CFIS presently:

1. General Studies (GST) Department: The Centre is hosting fourteen GST courses as an Academic service unit of the University with a total of twenty well-experienced lecturers in the various disciplines of General studies.

2. Entrepreneurship Development Centre: The Centre serves as Entrepreneurship development vehicle of the University which, in addition to conventional lectures in Entrepreneurship, undertakes skill acquisition projects for students offering entrepreneurship courses as a prerequisite of NUC for Nigerian graduates. Furthermore, the Centre facilitates University-wide entrepreneurship-related programmes which sometimes attract participants beyond the shores of Baze University. Proposal for development of ultra-modern entrepreneurship centre that would engage in entrepreneurship activities which would be profitable to the University is presently under consideration by the University Management. The University through the CFIS is presently in strategic entrepreneurship partnership engagements with several reputable public sector institutions and private sector organizations including Abuja Enterprise Agency (AEA); Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN); Hult International Business School and the United Nations Foundation; Network of Nigerian Entrepreneurship Club and so on.

3. Centre for Foundation Studies: The Centre also undertakes Foundation programmes for eligible students aspiring to gain admission into Nigerian Tertiary institutions. Preparatory classes are ongoing for students writing WAEC, JAMB and IJMBE, JUBEB, IGCSE and TOEFL. The Centre has submitted a proposal for the establishment of a comprehensive remedial programme which would serve both the existing students of the University and other external candidates who could use their results to secure admission in tertiary institutions both locally and abroad.

4. Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies: The Centre undertakes short courses certification programmes- for Government Agencies, professional bodies, Cooperatives and for organized private sector industries in peculiar areas.

5. SIWES Programme: The compulsory four months internship programme of Baze University is also domiciled and supervised by the CFIS.
